Why Food Should Be On The Climate Agenda

"We attended the Caribbean Climate and Energy Conference in Curaçao, where Amber van Veghel delivered an engaging presentation titled "Why Food Should Be on the Climate Agenda." She carefully broke down the full spectrum of environmental impacts caused by the food industry, clearly highlighting where the highest emissions occur and where the biggest opportunities lie for choosing food products that are more climate friendly. She brought a lively energy to the stage and with a touch of humor to keep the audience engaged, helping make a complex topic more approachable and clear. One key takeaway for us was how much the carbon footprint of food products can vary, not just between types of food, but also depending on where they’re produced, regardless of transport. We were especially surprised to learn that chicken can have a lower carbon footprint than cheese, challenging the previous assumptions about vegetarian choices always being more climate friendly. What was especially impactful was her call to action at the end of the presentation, where she provided her audience with tips on how to lower their carbon footprint by making small changes and more prudent choices in the food they consume."
